Symposium Gnomes

Our Youth group was gearing up for our 2012 kick-off. When asked about it, I simply told them that there were little Symposium Gnomes in the ceiling tiles; they were working hard on preparing a new and improved Youth Group that would rock their socks off. “Every once in a while,” I told them, “you can hear them scurrying about and see magical sparkles float down.” They just stared blankly. I don’t think they wanted gnomes planning their youth group. At their core, they want reliable, honest, real people who care, and will go out of their way to make youth group comfortable, safe, and a place where they can really get to know Jesus and grow in His word. Little did they know, those “Symposium Gnomes” I spoke of were actually a leadership team of some of the most amazing people I know.

While the idea of Symposium “gnomes” might be entertaining, I’m reminded of when Samuel came looking for the new King of Israel. “When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, 'Surely the LORD's anointed is before me.' But the LORD said to Samuel, 'Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD sees not as man sees: a man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart' ” — 1 Samuel 16:6-7. We are truly blessed to have a Staff of Leaders this year. Each one is different, each one unique. We’re all at different points in our lives, and yet we each hold Jesus Christ our God and Savior as the most important part of our lives. His guidance will lead our leaders as we pour out into our students.
