What is a meal worth?

I asked my BDH class this last Sunday what they thought a meal was worth. Some claimed as little as 75 cents. We then pretended to go camping and of course got lost. Wandering about, we became more and more hungry. A full day past and we weren't sure we would ever be found. Our tummies rumbling, all of a sudden a strange vender man sprang up and offered us a glorious meal with BBQ Chicken, and mashed potatoes, corn on the cob and an ice cold glass of milk. Not surprising, everyone was willing to pay a lot more for their meal. It's a lot like Jesus' feeding of the 5,000 or should I say 20,000. Those coming from all around gathered to hear Jesus speak, or maybe even be healed by him. They had traveled in some cases I'm sure, for days. Jesus asks Phillip where they would get food to feed all the people with. Phil must be a math major because he does some quick math and figures out that even if they had (in our day) $20,000 it would only be enough to basically give each person a dollar's worth of food. You just have to love what they do next: Andrew steals a little boy's lunch: 5 crackers and a couple  sardines. I imagine this kid saying, " I think Jesus just stole my lunch!" But then imagine his surprise when Jesus returns to him much more than just his little lunch, he gets an all-u-can-eat buffet. Not to mention his little lunch fed thousands of people.

As we embark on the journey of the 30-hour famine, there might be a similarity here. Most of the world lives on less than $2 a day... This is difficult to comprehend. Yet, just like this young boy (paidarion in the Greek: meaning a young child probably under 7 according to James M.M. Francis) we have the opportunity to take the very little we have, maybe just a meal, and give it to God. That's just what we'll be doing April 28-29th. We're giving up a couple of meals in hopes that we can gain support and turn those few meals into what may feed thousands in places like Uganda Afghanistan, Burundi, Haiti, or Malawi Africa. This is an opportunity to be a part of something big.

May we learn what is to be fed by Jesus.
